Call for papers: IECON 2016 Special Session: Sustainable Cities: Tools & Methodologies for Managing Energy Performance In The Built Environment

The real time monitoring of energy use in buildings typically shows large variations with respect to the predicted performance. This is further compounded when interacting blocks of buildings at district level are considered. This motivates the need to understand the real performance of buildings and districts by capturing the actual energy flows and district dynamics. Effective tools and methodologies are needed to improve our understanding of post occupancy energy demand, space usage, and user behaviour. Quantifying the performance gap between actual and predicted energy use is non-trivial with the performance gap being dependent on time and contextual factors, and varying from building to building. New tools and methodologies are needed to measure, understand and significantly reduce real energy use in comparison to predicted energy use across blocks of buildings.

Original contributions addressing the following topics will be considered:

• Cloud based building management systems (BMS) for district level management
• Information-driven systems for integrating and managing the built environment
• Modelling, simulation, optimisation, and control of energy flows in built environments
• Preventative maintenance, fault detection and adaptive diagnosis
• Measurements and control of environmental comfort (thermal, health, air quality, etc.)
• Energy efficiency driven by district and building occupant in the loop
• Tools and methodologies for energy prediction and validation in buildings and districts
• User behaviour aware building energy modelling
• Sensing and control systems for managing energy flows in the built environment
